Copper River Trail

On the frontlines to the North of us, Governor of Alaska Tony Knowles wants to build a $27 million "trail" down the old Copper River & Northwestern Railroad bed between Chitina and Cordova. EPC has already publicly stated that the State of Alaska will have to build a road in order to build a trail. Governor Knowles wants to build what he calls "a world class" Copper River Trail. What he fails to realize is that a world class trail already exists - it's called the Copper River.

Without any guaranteed protection to the Copper River Delta salmon or habitat, the Delta's commercial fishery that continues to be the catalyst for our local economy is now endangered. Also, there is no guarantee that a freeway won't be built along this path. USFS regulations say, "that an improvement to a trail is a road." EPC cannot support this major intrusive development project on the Copper.
